While he was in the army, Thackery lost some of the hearing in one ear during an attack. Still, he continued singing. He performed throughout his time in the army. He also took part in a series of concerts while he was traveling on a ship from Lancashire to Korea.

“We went all over the brigade. They’d erect some sort of stage out of whatever they could find. We’d set up and the troops would sit on the ground – hundreds of them. We even entertained Americans, and Koreans would you believe! They didn’t understand a word we were saying, but they enjoyed the music,” Thackery told  The Royal Chelsea Hospital .
